Periods, also known as menstruation mark the end of puberty. It is a process of release of blood from a girl’s uterus through her vagina.
Menstruation occur when you reach 12 years of age.
Well, that’s just an average, periods can occur anytime between 10 to 15 years of age. This schedule is different for different girls with different bodies.
Signs of occurence :
Periods generally start two years after the breast starts to develop.
The vaginal discharge fluid which looks like mucus is something that a girl might see or feel before her periods start.
The changes of chemical messengers called hormones in the body is the main cause of occurence of periods.
The lining of the uterus is build up by the estrogen and progesterone.
Estrogen and Progesterone are the hormones that ovary releazes.
The lining is built so that it attaches to a fertilized egg and start developing.
If there is no fertilized egg the lining will break down and this process will happen over and over again.
The lining is built up in a month and then it breaks down.
That’s why periods occur once in a month.
What is ovulation and how it is related to periods?
The release of an egg from ovary is termed as ovulation.
Estrogen and Progesterone also cause the eggs to leave ovaries. The egg reaches the uterus through thin tubes called fallopian tubes.
If the sperm cell fertilizes the egg, it gets attached to the walls of uterus where it develops into a baby over time.
A non fertilized egg causes the uterus lining to break down resulting in periods.
Regular or Irregular?
Initially when the period starts, it does not come regularly which is completely normal.
The periods start coming regular after 2-3 years of a girl’s first period.
Pregnancy and periods!
A girl is capable of getting pregnant as soon as her periods start.
There are chances of getting pregnant even before the first period if a girl’s hormones are active.
For how many days does periods last?
Menstruation can last for usually 5 days. However it can be shorter or longer depending upon the girl’s body.
The choice- Menstrual Cup, pad or Tampon?
A girl has many choices to deal with the blood flow.
You should experiment first to check which suits you the best.
You can use all the methods or switch methods according to your choice.
Pads is the most common and often used method to deal with the blood flow. They are made of cotton in different sizes and shapes .
A lot of girls actually find tampon more convenient than pad. A tampon is basically a cotton plug which is put into the vagina to absorb the blood.
A menstrual cup is made up of silicone. It is inserted into the vagina. The menstrual cup holds blood untill the girl empties it.
The quantity of blood that comes out :
A girl doesn’t suffer from a lot of blood loss during her periods. It looks like loosing a lot, but a few tablespoons of blood is lost during periods.
When does Periods stop?
Menopause is a point of age where the Menstruation cycle stops. This usually happens between 45 to 55 years of age.
PMS( Premenstrual Syndrome) :
These are the emotional and physical symptoms that happen during or before periods. PMS includes mood swings, anxiety, bloating or acne.
What helps during the cramps?
Many girls have reported cramps during periods, specially in first few days.
